OCTAA is proud to announce the nominees for the 5th General Assembly meeting to be held on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. South Coast Chinese Cultural Center located at 9 Truman Irvine, CA 92620. At this meeting, we must elect three (3) members for the Board of Directors. The positions will be for two-year terms as described in our Constitution & Bylaws. All members are invited to participate and vote in person at the General Assembly Meeting during OCTAAs Anniversary event. Members may cast votes and speak to nominees from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Election results will be announced later during the event.

We feel fortunate to be fielding such a dedicated and talented group of persons as nominees. However, please keep in mind that voting is not limited to these persons. In our continued efforts to help improve educational endeavors in Turkey, two chapter organizations of the Association of Turkish Americans of Southern California: OCTAA and TALL have launched a collaborative campaign to provide scholarships for academically gifted but economically disadvantaged college students to help them continue their higher education and realize their dreams. This project is designed to provide quality education for young women who face economic hardship and to give them the opportunity to become leaders in their own communities.

In response to an e-mail titled Lutfen Sesimi Duyun (Please Hear My Voice!) we received from the Karacoban Sariveli Elementary school teacher Derya Incialan in October 2007, OCTAA, in collaboration with Bridge to Turkiye Fund (BTF), organized a fundraiser to support the immediate needs of the Karaçoban Sariveli Elementary School in Erzurum, Turkey. Our goal was to raise $3,000 in donations to help address some of the schools immediate needs. We came together as a community and exceeded our goal and raised $3,725 for this worthy cause....

We are gearing up for a whole new semester of full of fun and learning. We have already planned an active start with a full schedule of activities. On the 30th of August, we are kicking off our semester right with an evening social event. Bring your friends to OCTAAs annual bonfire event at the Corona del Mar State Beach and have a good time while registering for the new semester. On the September 6th, right before the first class, there will be another registration session for those who missed the bonfire event. However, you may register any time before the first day of school by completing a registration form and mailing to us with the required tuition.

Orange County Turkish School celebrated its first Childrens Day festivities on April 21st, 2007 at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center in Irvine, California. More than 100 guests attended this joyful event.
Program began with co-presenters Cenap Biyiklis and Melis Kocyigits welcoming remarks. Melis opened the festivities with a famous quote by Ataturk "To see me does not necessarily mean to see my face. To understand my thoughts is to have seen me... The event continued with singing the Turkish National Anthem with participation from the audience followed by students saying the Türk Andı, a recitation that is similar to the US Pledge of Allegience. The program continued with our School Director Aysu Tazebays presentation on Ataturks address to the youth, his love for children, schools mission and background, and the meaning of April 23rd Childrens Day. She completed her presentation by thanking all of the volunteers, students, parents and the sponsors for their invaluable contributions to the event.

This month's Turkish movie is Neredesin Firuze, a musical comedy from 2004. Shown in Turkish with English subtitles at the UCI Crystal Cove Room on Saturday, February 26, 2005.
Ticket sales will begin on-site at 6:30pm, and the film will start at 7pm. The movie run time is 2 hours, 13 minutes.

OCTAA and the Irvine Multicultural Assocation invite you to attend a FREE showing of the acclaimed Turkish film Uzak (Distant), at the Irvine Civic Center tomorrow, November 16.
The program begins with an introduction by OCTAA, followed by the showing of the film and then an opportunity for discussion. Turkish refreshments will be provided.

OCTAA extends its appreciation and thanks to Funda Oguz and the organizing committee for a successful Ball. Every aspect of the event including the location, dinner, center pieces and the entertainment by Muazzez Ersoy, surprise guest entertainer Arto, and Ati, made it a memorable evening for all.
